Deadlines are fast approaching so here is a reminder that the submission deadline for outside:inside pop-up festival is Friday May 20th and for the Reading Arts Week, the submission deadline is Wednesday 1 June (see previous updates for fuller information)

There are a couple more opportunities on the horizon, firstly we are looking for artists who are interested in taking part in our Third Thursday programme. To find out more about Third Thursday, visit here. We are looking for artists from any artforms ~ dancers, actors, singers, musicians, film makers, poets, crafters, makers, designers, sculptors, photographers. Our idea is to have a summer garden party during the day down the main street in Reading on Thursday 21 July 2011. This month is already a celebration of arts, music and film with the outside:inside pop-up festival so this Third Thursday will be a celebration, a pop-up arty tea party. Anyone is welcome to submit and submission forms can be found here. Deadline for submission is 23 June 2011

The second artistic opportunity is the forthcoming Nuit Blanche, 14-15 October 2011. Nuit Blanche, after a successful pilot project last year, is inviting proposals from artists, performers, organisations and venues to take part musicians from this dusk to dawn to event. We will be hosting a special artists info evening on Wednesday 18 May from 6.30-8.30 at jelly, 42 Market Place, Reading. The steering group which includes representatives from Reading Borough Council, independent arts organisations and Reading UK CIC will be present to give advice, support and talk through ideas. Hope you can make it!

Open Call for Artists Submissions for outside:inside pop-up Festival

outside:inside is more innovative than ever before. In a bid to keep on pushing the boundaries of music and art as we know it, the event will be taking on the challenge of becoming the UK’s first ever pop-up festival.

This new pop-up status will delight and surprise as events literally ‘pop-up’ all over town with its landscape transformed by the opening of previously undiscovered areas, with more diverse buildings, top local, national and international talent, and eclectic cuisine. Pop-up venues, art galleries, cinemas, theatres and restaurants will spring out from courtyards, closed shops, empty office spaces, churches, bars, venues, and open green spaces across the month of July.

outside:inside festival is a project in its 4th year linking live music and Reading based arts organisations together for a month long city centre festival 9th-30th July 2011.

outside:inside 2011 promises to be the biggest and best yet, with some huge attention grabbing headliners already confirmed.

outside:inside pop-up festival 2011 is now seeking proposals from emerging artists who wish to be considered for inclusion in the pop-up exhibitions, shops and installations in partnership with jelly and the Open for Art project.

They are currently a number of shops available for either shop window based pieces or installations within the spaces and opportunities include producing illuminated works, works in digital media as well as installation, sculpture and two-dimensional work.

Some of the spaces will operate through the festival as performance spaces and we welcome proposals for artists in any medium who would be interested in working with the programmed bands.

Deadline for submission is Friday May 20th.

Artists benefits:

* There is no fee available for artists however there is a small budget available to reimburse travel costs and a proportion of costs related to the piece and installation. This will shared between all artists.
* The opportunity to take part in the UK’s first ever pop-up festival with a large audience throughout the festival period
* Working alongside jelly and outside:inside team installing works and working the spaces, with learning opportunities
* Professional networking opportunities
* Inclusion in the website of the festival and jelly
* There is an opportunity for the use of some space to create the work prior to the festival in the form of some short term residencies in the town centre
* Possibility to submit pieces for sale through artists pop-up retails shop.

Once again submissions are being accepted from learners/local artists work for this years Reading Arts Week!

The week long festival is organised by New Directions, Reading Borough Council, Jelly and the Reading Informal Adult Learning Network.

We welcome painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, ceramics, furniture, glass, mosaics, jewellery and digital art including video.

All submitted work will be exhibited at the Reading Arts Week Weekend Exhibition at Penta Hotel Reading and a selection of work will be exhibited at preview events in Broad Street, The Forbury and Caversham Court Gardens.

FLAW: The New Work by Derek Hill
Bracknell Gallery

Derek Hill works on up to ten paintings at a time - all of which are made on canvas prepared on a stretcher of wood and board, often laid flat on the floor. Hill’s process of painting combines industrial paint and solvents with oil painting. As the result, the canvases develop rich luminous quality, appearing almost three dimensional and become transformed under both natural and artificial light.

Hill’s practice presents the paradox of the industrial processes, which involves using toxic and combustible materials, to achieve something alive and organic. Hill presents a unique vision of abstraction in painting that explores the artist’s unenviable task of pursuing the art of perfection.

Derek Hill is the co-founder and lead artist of the Art Studio, Sunderland, where he has been based since 1986.

Jerwood Drawing Prize
Mirror Gallery and Atrium

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. It aims to promote and reward excellence and talent in contemporary drawing practice, through the support and recognition of work by established and emerging artists.

From just under 3000 entries, the 2010 exhibition is selected by Charles Darwent, Art Critic, Independent on Sunday; Jenni Lomax, Director, Camden Arts Centre; and Emma Talbot, artist.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is part of Jerwood Visual Arts, a major initiative of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Fantastical Drawings by Rosamund Farmer
Community Gallery

Guildford based Rosamund Farmer creates drawings of homes and public spaces such as museums, which reflect how inhabitants relate to the space. Within the domestic, she focuses on the imprint of inhabitants and life’s necessities and comforts on a personal and individual level whilst celebrating “unnecessary” beauty and decorative elements. The work represents an idealised view of both domestic and invented rooms which fulfils the artist’s desire for the extraordinary.

For the Community Gallery, Rosamund will also create a site-specific wall drawing.

Rosamund has exhibited extensively, both collaboratively and independently throughout the South-East, and won the Art at Work prize from Guildford Arts (2009).

Caversham Artists Christmas Show 2010

On 6th & 7th November Caversham Artists 2010 Christmas show is taking place at New Directions, Caversham. There will be 16 artists taking part selling a range of handmade goodies including jewellery, paintings, decoupage furniture, wood, ceramics, glass, drawing, stone carving and more.

The show will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th November. There is free parking in Waitrose car park.

There will be the opportunity to pose for a silhouette cut in 2-3 minutes by artist Charles Burns, on Sunday 2-5pm. Children and adults are welcome and no need for neat hairstyles!

New Directions will also be offering Pottery workshops on both Saturday and Sunday.

Caversham Arts Trail
The Caversham Artists Autumn show is taking place in Mays Barn, a historic 17th century barn building tucked away behind 234 Peppard Road, Emmer Green, RG4 8UA (Next to the Seat garage). Please come and visit us on 18 & 19 September Saturday between 11-6pm and Sunday 12-6pm.

This diverse exhibition focuses on the work of ten Caversham Artists members with hand dyed and woven silk scarves by Gloria Pitt, delicate slip cast ceramics by Lauren Denney, Photography by Joanne de Nobriga, as well as Paintings inspired by driftwood by Julie Simmonds. The barn also houses energetic lift drawings by Charles Burns, vintage decoupaged furniture by Louise Spires of Kitsch-En-Sync, pastel portraits by Mary Phelan, graceful wooden platters and bowls by Peter Quarmby and contemporary silver jewellery by Matthew Hitch. Outside in the grounds of the barn you can enjoy some of Roger Smalley's elegant stone sculptures .

Nuit Blanche is an exciting "cultural all-nighter" presenting contemporary art events from dusk to dawn. It enlivens cities all round the world such as Paris, Berlin and Toronto, and 2010 is the debut for Reading. This first year will be a small* but magical series of indoor and outdoor events on the night of 15/16 October, and with your help it will grow into a more spectacular festival next year.
The Nuit Blanche Reading website will list the program organised by partners OpenHand OpenSpace, jelly, Whitley Arts Festival, Rising Sun Arts Centre and arjeea21, with activities in the Town Centre, Whitley,
and the Keep on Oxford Road. New events will be added as people join in, so keep checking back to www.nuitblanchereading.org.uk

Attached is a call for artists to take part in Parcel Fever, a one night exhibition event at OpenHand OpenSpace on the night of 15/16 October as part of Nuit Blanche Reading 2010.
It's not absolutely necessary to be present in person on the night, although we hope a good crowd will attend. Even if you can't come for the whole time please do drop in for a bit and participate if possible. Parcel Fever, 7pm - 6am, will be preceded by a short Big Draw event called Night Monsters, 5-7pm, also at the Keep, 571 Oxford Road, Reading, RG30 1HL.. All are welcome to that too. From 6am on Saturday morning we will make our way into Reading town centre to meet other artists and participants at Forbury Gardens for a Dawn Chorus and breakfast.
The brief can be interpreted imaginatively - you could propose something simple, complex, small, large, informal, formal, edible, starting materials with instructions, highly finished, stationary, mobile, startling, favourite, hideous, endearing ...the possibilities are endless. Reading Voices: 3rd Thursdays
A new programme of monthly art events will be launched in November and artists are invited to submit work for selection for the launch night. The events will be a diverse programme of visual/ literary/music and performing arts in non-traditional arts venues such as hotel foyers, audio equipment show rooms, restaurants, cafes, department stores, office building lobbies etc. developed from the Open for Art programme (a partnership between jelly and Reading UK CIC). 3rd Thursday: Reading Voices launch in partnership with Novotel, with a Beaujolais Nouveau art auction evening on 18 November and artists are asked to submit works for selection for the auction. 15% of the sales will be for charity with all other monies straight to the artist. The Outside:Inside Festival is a month long celebration of the arts. Music, Film, Art, Theatre and Dance are all showcased throughout the festival period amongst the festivals inside and outside spaces.
The Concept? Simple. The Outside:Inside takes the inside art institutions outside for the general public like yourself to enjoy out on the streets, and open spaces; whilst the outside festival vibe is taken inside, into the venues and into the shops, the restaurants, bars and quite possibly some pretty unusual places too, but you will have to keep your eyes peeled for that.

Performers will be descending on Reading from around the globe, with acts representing many great nations including Israel, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Canada, the USA, and even Transylvania, Romania. These top global acts will bring a wealth of differing global styles with them, interacting with the huge amount of local talent whic will be drawn to the festival.
Interaction is the key, build an art installation, stroll the art market stalls, chooe from a worldwide array of food, ponder the outside art, sing along to the bands on stage, take a moment to reflect on the poetry and spoken word, be suprised by the random improvised theatre, foot-tap to a bit of Jazz or getting down and dirty at one of our inside venues afterparties or headline shows alongside the festival profile bands, big name DJs, and organisers till the wee hours.

Their joint aim. To provide Reading with a new more vibrant and celebrated culture, whilst providing a voice to the wealth of artistic talent and young enterprise in the Thames Valley area.
The festival is for you. The people of Reading, the familys, the shop workers, the shop owners, the bartenders, the professional, the young, and the old. This is why we have made all outside space free. It won't cost you a penny to come along and interact.

Karpouziaaa, Whitley Arts Festival Film Showing Wednesday March 24th 2.20pm
There will be a second showing of the Whitley Arts Festival 09’s major commission. The film 'Karpouziaaa' (Mark Aerial Waller) will be shown at John Madejski Academy, Northumberland Avenue in Whitley during their arts week on March 24th at 2.20pm. Admission is FREE. This will be its second outing, the film having received it's world premiere during the festival last October. The film was made in Whitley and features people from the community as actors in the film. The doors will be open to anyone, so please feel free to invite anyone.
"Karpouziaaa - Artist Mark Aerial Waller sets up a model for fresh food sales in South Reading. In Karpouziaaa, Waller proposes to bring a shopping idea from South European countries to South Reading: A salesperson drives slowly through residential areas calling attention to the goods over a loudspeaker. The salesperson’s voice becomes a bold rhythmic poem; a public voice usually associated with political canvassing and totalitarian Science Fiction states. The sales experiment, held for a single day at the end of September, is documented on video with participation of the community of Whitley. The realm of fantasy and poetry is made concrete for a day through the routine of buying and selling"

Open for Art
The first Open For Art venue was launched on Friday 27 November at 173 Friar Street with an exhibition curated by Caversham artist, Bithja Moor entitled Peepshow.

Open for Art is a partnership project between jelly and Reading UK CIC, utilising Reading’s empty shop windows with art from Reading based artists. This follows a successful pilot project in June 2009 creating pop-up galleries in Reading. Working with the landlords and agents of Reading we will be using temporary spaces, creating a visual profile for the arts and showing Reading’s individuality as a town.

There are currently four live venues in Reading Town Centre:
36 Market Place ~ a changing show of students work from Thames Valley University and Reading University
173 Friar Street ~ Skills Swap, a celebration of the talents of the local community for Fairtrade Fortnight
Station Hill _ Magic Carpet, travelling show from members of Reading Guild of Artists
Friars Walk ~ works by Nicholas Barton, final year student at Reading University.

They are plans underway to work across the Borough in other areas with the first new space in South Reading expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

How to become involved:
We are looking for artists, either individuals and groups who have an idea, these could either be a group of works ready to exhibit or making a piece specific to the sites available. All submissions/ proposals should be made directly to Suzanne Stallard, via email suzanne@jelly.org.uk. If you have a specific location or certain requirements please outline these in your application. Art & Leisure in Caversham Court Gardens

A packed programme of free activities and workshops for adults is taking place in the historic Caversham Court Gardens.
Tutors from New Directions will be leaving the classroom to run a wide variety of free fun activities and workshops for adults throughout the day including Pottery, Sculpture, Tai Chi, Meditation and Indian Head Massage.
The free event runs from 10:30am to 3.30pm has been organised by New Directions – Reading Borough Council’s learning and employment service and the councils parks department.
Visitors can take to a potters wheel to learn how to throw pots or watch sculpture figures being made from terracotta. A small art gallery with a showcase of adult learners work will be on display in the grade II listed riverside gazebo building.
An exciting mix of workshops will be taking place including: Reiki (10:30am–11:30am), Meditation (11:30am–12:30pm), Making Ceramic Fish (1pm- 3.30pm), Reflexology (1pm-2pm) Tai Chi (1:30pm–2:30pm) and Indian Head Massage (2pm-3pm).
A free tour of the historic gardens will be available throughout the day organised by The Friends of Caversham Court Gardens. The volunteer tour guides will be leading the way around the gardens exploring exciting and hidden facts. The team from the forthcoming Reading Contemporary Arts Fair being held at Rivermead will be giving visitors an insight to the exhibition taking place later in April.

The fair is being orgainised by the team behind the highly successful Windsor Contemporary Art Fair, now in its sixth year.

Organiser Sarah McAllister says: “We are very excited about launching the Reading Contemporary Art Fair, our events have always been about bringing stimulating new art to the widest possible audience. We present our exhibitors in a relaxed but professional setting, giving them the best platform to showcase their work while allowing them to talk about their art directly with the public – something few other art shows do. Our aim is to de-mystify the art world and make it truly accessible to everyone.”

The fair brings together an exciting mix of over 80 artists, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists and selected galleries offering the very best in contemporary art with prices from £30 to £3,000.
Exhibitors includes artists from all over the UK, Europe and a strong contingent from the local area, newly qualified and established artists along with a number of galleries bringing together accepted masters and young beginners. Open for Art is a partnership project between jelly and Reading UK CIC, utilising Reading's empty shop windows with art from Reading based artists. There is further demand by many individual artists and groups including Hang-on Artists and the Experimental Film Festival. Development of the Open for Art project would enable a Borough wide project working in partnership with the independent Arts sector supporting areas with empty shop units.

Benefits of the project:
• profile raising of Reading and its creative community
• engaging local people and the local creative community, including people who may not normally have access to the arts
• improving environment – including tidying up and painting of empty units, making units more desirable as lettable units
• improving the area – making the area a more desirable place to visit by offering a visual arts programme of high quality local artists

In the first year it is estimated that the programme will engage with:
• 72 emerging to mid--career professional artists (based on 3 venues live at any one point)
• nuture and develop emerging arts groups.
• A significant number of the public
The work being undertaken by the independent creative community, led by jelly, in Reading has identified link projects across the Reading area, both within the Town Centre and associated activities in the areas identified below:
*North Reading (Caversham Artists)
*South Reading (Whitley Arts Festival)
*East Reading (Whiteknights and Reading University)
*West Reading (Open Hand Studios, Reading Spaces Studios, Moondogs)

Mark Aerial Waller makes films and videos that reference cinema, providing both an interpretation and interruption of its history. With recourse to technological and narrative mechanisms, Waller stretches, reiterates and at times perverts the mainstream vocabulary of structure and dramatic staging. He selects very particular cameras, stock, transfer processes and camera shots through which to approach narrative time-based work with a painterly, self-referential touch.

Exuberance – Caversham artists step out of the workshop

13 artists from Caversham will step out of their workshops to take part in Exuberance at 43 Peach Street Wokingham over the Christmas and New Year as part of the Empty Shops Initiative.

There will be two shows taking place, the first from 17th to 30th December and the second from 4th to 16th January 2010 with meet the artists evenings on 17^th December and 7^th January 2010 from 5pm – 9pm.

The first show will open on Thursday 17th December at 12.30pm. There will be late opening and the opportunity to meet the artists over a glass of wine between 5pm and 9pm.

Just a quick reminder that All I want for Christmas is taking place this weekend (28 &29 November) at the New Directions Centre, North Reading Centre (Caversham Centre) by Waitrose Car park in Caversham.

Saturday 10am – 5 pm & Sunday 11am – 5pm , 28 & 29 November 2009.

Not only will there be a range of work for sale from local makers, there will also be drop in pottery workshops from 11-3 every day. These will run on a first come first served basis so get there early to avoid disappointment. And if that isn't enough to tempt you there will be homemade mince pies and lots of lovely people to meet!

There will be Ceramics, painting, furniture, wood, jewellery, weaving and lots more locally produced handmade art and crafts for sale. On both Saturday and Sunday tutors from New Directions courses will also be showing and selling their work.

REFF: Reading Experimental Film Festival, 2009

WHO: artists / filmmakers.
WHAT: Short narrative / non-narrative experimental films, to be submitted into the Screening Programme of the 2nd REFF. The festival will include a special live performance of Guy Sherwin's 1970's seminal piece 'Man with Mirror', a survey of The London Film Makers Co-op and a Matt Hulse retrospective.It will also feature a REFF commisioned piece of work from Mark Aerial Waller.

WHEN: 23rd-25th October.
PAYMENTS: No payments.
CHARGES: No charges.

Future of OVADA Gallery - Meeting 18th June 6pm

Many of you will know Ovada or have been supported by Ovada in recent years as artists.
Although based in Oxford, Ovada has supported many artists across the region. It's the sort of organisation I feel we could do with in Reading. Things look like they might be changing. www.ovada.org.uk

There is an open meeting to discuss the future of OVADA and the gallery space in relation to the planned redevelopment of the Old Fire Station building complex which is due to start mid 2010. The focus of the new development will be a Skylight Centre for Oxford, managed by the homeless charity Crisis which will open to the public in March 2011.

This meeting is primarily aimed at artists, as OVADA's major stakeholders, but it is an open meeting that everybody is invited to attend. They would like to share with you what they know about the development and how it will impact OVADA, and gain your thoughts and feedback on how the organisation could develop beyond 2010.

This will be free of charge and a fantastic opportunity to discuss continuing art practice beyond this point. Not to be missed. Please spread the word.

"Paul Buck worked at Better Books in the 1960s, his memories of this period can be found in Iain Sinclair's anthology London: City of Disappearances. His work derives from text, from language, & through various performance approaches often resulting in other textual realizations. He has written somewhere in the region of 50 books, including the novel The Honeymoon Killers. In the 1970s he edited the literary/arts magazine Curtains, which published writing by Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Iain Sinclair, Allen Fisher, Eric Mottram, & Paul Auster. He has performed at the ICA as part of an Artaud/Genet weekend along with artists including Peter Sellars, Patti Smith, & Pierre Guyotat. He has translated works by Bernard Noël, Pierre Klossowski, Maurice Blanchot, Catherine Breillat, & Raul Ruiz. He has worked with Marc Almond, Melinda Miel, & 48 Cameras. Spread Wide (2004) is a work generated from correspondence with Kathy Acker. His current projects include works on Paris & the cinema & a new novel." jelly, with the help of Reading artists, will be helping anyone and everyone who wants to become an Artist for the day.

To celebrate 20 years of the Children’s Festival jelly is creating a town full of artists and artists in the making for the day – it is a hugely ambitious project, with many artists already signed up to help. jelly is providing materials, the expertise and anyone will have the opportunity to be creative. ~ we are looking to recreate the Freeze exhibition of 1988 and create our own stars of the future, culminating in a mass art exhibition and changing the face of Reading for the day.

The exhibition of works created on the day will take place using the railings around Town Hall Square and the John Soane monument.

Window exhibitions of works by the artists helping will be housed in 27/28 Market Place (opposite the Post Office) and 173 Friar Street (in Town Hall Square) from Friday 22 May until Friday 5 June inc. All this has been made possible by the generous help and support of Reading artists, Reading people and businesses, including Sainsbury’s, Haslams, Fryer Holt.

Changes, happening and events

When we originally stated to meet, Jo and I, it seemed such a small thing just to hang out once a month and escape from the *whatevers* that we may be doing and then more people came and then other things started to happen and people started to talk and plot and devise and suddenly there seems to be a lot happening round here.

This blog doesn't manage to do all the things we want it to do, to find things it's quite complex but it does store information and is a reminder of what there has been before. We are working on what the future of this online space will look like, how it might happen and what the purpose. It's taking time because we are so busy but it doesn't mean it's neglected, I'm reminded of it everyday that I use the internet for something or other and realise how the *networks* we have all created can grow and be improved. Maybe it's something we could all talk about at the next hang-on, or post a comment here?

A definite page would be too list the many events and exhibitions going on here ~ I know I sometimes thought not much happened round here but the proof is by the postings on here and emails. (speaking of which see the flyer for Julia's performance on Friday 12th June).

It'd be good to hear what you think, how we can amalgamate the information, show our work and continue to grow.

Live performances on 17 April:

6.00 - 7.30pm: Philip Lee, in Sitting Slip, explores extreme forms of child’s play and pleasure in doing something that an adult is not supposed to do.

7.30 - 8.30pm Fedor Pavlof-Andreevich performs Dead Radio. The audience is invited to twiddle the artist’s knobs making him physically switch from station to station – signing, reading news, quoting popular radio shows – all from the Soviet Union era.
Also, Sandcastles by Kay Sentance in the Bracknell town centre and the arts centre during the exhibition and opening day. Sandcastles, far from a beach, aims to provide playful reminders and surprising chance encounters between the sandcastles and the public.

Plus Images 32 group exhibition in the mansion spaces, presenting the best of British contemporary illustration.

Full of Beans: An Exhibition Taking a Look at Life

Three local artists who are members of St Andrew's invite you to their show exploring the theme of life over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. This is a contemporary art exhibition in a religious space, and not a religious art exhibition. We do hope, however, that the space will provide a reflective setting in which to share some of our thoughts about life -- the little and the big, the serious and the light-hearted. There will be a mixture of different media on display, ceramics, sketches and installations, as well as a range of activities and events throughout the weekend.

Reading Museum could win award from Art Fund Prize (evening post article) - all to do with those lovely boxes that the museum lends out - if you haven't used the scheme there are some amazing stuffed animals and other gorgeous paraphernalia that is lent to colleges etc. - and they've always welcomed artists who have used the stores / study room.
